The short version
We don’t require an account, we don’t run ads, and we don’t sell data. The editor keeps your documents in your own browser, and the extension converts pages locally on your machine. There’s very little for us to collect — by design.
01Summary
Best Markdown Editor provides two tools: an online Markdown editor and a Chrome extension that converts HTML to Markdown. Both are free and built to work without sending your content to us.
This policy explains what information is involved when you use them, how it’s handled, and the choices you have.
02Information we collect
We’ve designed the product to collect as little as possible:
- No account information. There’s no sign-up, so we never ask for your name, email, or a password.
- No document content. What you write or convert stays on your device. We don’t receive, store, or have access to it.
- Minimal technical data. Like most websites, our hosting provider may log standard request data (such as IP address and browser type) for security and reliability. This is not used to identify you.
03The online editor
The editor runs entirely in your browser. Your documents and preferences are saved using your browser’s localStorage so your work persists between visits.
- This data lives only on your device and is never transmitted to our servers.
- Clearing your browser storage (or using private/incognito mode) removes it.
- Exporting a file writes it directly to your device — we’re not involved in that step.
04The Chrome extension
The HTML-to-Markdown extension performs conversions locally, in your browser. When you select content and convert it:
- The conversion happens on your machine; the selected content is not sent to any external server.
- The result is placed on your clipboard or shown for you to copy.
- After installation, it continues to work offline.
- It requests only the browser permissions needed to read the page content you choose to convert.
05Analytics & cookies
We aim to keep this site free of tracking. We do not use advertising cookies or sell behavioral data. If we use privacy-respecting, aggregate analytics to understand overall traffic, it is configured to avoid collecting personally identifiable information, and the editor and extension function fully without it.
06Third-party services
We rely on a small number of infrastructure providers — for example, web hosting and the Chrome Web Store for distribution. These providers process limited technical data under their own privacy policies in order to deliver the service. We do not share your document content with them, because we don’t have it.
07Data & security
Because your content stays on your device, the most important safeguard is the one you already control: your own browser and computer. For the data we do touch (such as server logs), we apply reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect it. No method of transmission or storage is ever completely secure, but keeping data local dramatically reduces the risk.
08Children’s privacy
Our tools are intended for a general audience and are not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because we don’t collect account data, there is little personal information involved for any user.
09Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the product evolves or as required by law. When we make material changes, we’ll revise the “Last updated” date above. Continued use of the tools after an update means you accept the revised policy.
